Position Summary:

MassachusettsBay Community College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track facultyposition at the rank of Assistant Professor of Advanced Manufacturing fromqualified applicants. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion forteaching and promoting success among a diverse student population. Facultymembers are responsible for developing educational and evaluation materialsconsistent with the philosophy and framework of MassBay Community College andthe Engineering programs in accordance with the evolving needs of the STEMdivision. The ideal candidate will be interested in contributing to growing theManufacturing and Automation programs. The faculty member will be responsiblefor maintaining expertise in related Engineering, Engineering Design, andMechanical Engineering curricula, instruction, and assessment, with particularrelevance for this very exciting and dynamic time at MassBay with regard to ourManufacturing programs.

Thesuccessful candidate will be comfortable offering hands-on laboratory coursesusing current computer technologies, software, and tools. The highest prioritytopics of relevance for expertise in teaching are in our Engineering Design ASprogram and our Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Manufacturing Certificateprograms. These topics include mechanical 3D modeling CAD software,introduction to advanced manufacturing concepts, Computer Numerical Control(CNC) programming, automation, Lean Six Sigma, and quality concepts. Thesuccessful candidate will also engage in excellent teaching, advising, andmentoring to support students' growth in technical skills and methodologieswithin the advanced manufacturing domain. The candidate will employ these areasof expertise toward the purpose of our current and future AdvancedManufacturing programs, which is to provide an advanced manufacturinggeneralist foundation on which learners can narrow their focus moving forwardin their careers, further education, and/or continuing professional learning.More generally, the successful applicant will demonstrate a solid understandingof a community college's role in workforce development. The ideal candidatewill demonstrate a strong commitment to collaboration and professionaldevelopment. Knowledge and or understanding of grant funding is not necessarybut would be advantageous. The successful candidate will help the EngineeringDepartment support existing relevant laboratory equipment and develop relevantfuture courses and teaching strategies for students with diverse backgroundsand interests to support student recruitment and retention. More generally, thesuccessful candidate will demonstrate a good understanding of shared governanceand a strong commitment to collaboration and professional development.

Courses may be held in the classroom at any of the three campuses(in-person), or in the hybrid or online environment upon approval aftercompleting training. However, the candidate must be able to teach in-person oncampus. Classes may also be held at regional high schools and regionalemployers. The candidate will have the opportunity to shape the curriculum, assistthe Engineering and Technology Department in the selection and use ofappropriate educational materials and technology in the classroom, and engagein community-based outreach activities as applied to the area of AdvancedManufacturing.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Teach a full-time (15 credit hours per semester) schedule of Advanced Manufacturing and related courses, which may include, but are not limited to, the list found online in the academic catalog;
  • Effectively communicate inter-personally orally and in writing;
  • Work and collaborate effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff;
  • Prepare course syllabi and develop curricula to meet course and program requirements and student learning outcomes;
  • Assist with supporting Advanced Manufacturing equipment and tools;
  • Serve as academic advisor to students, with expertise in advising and mentoring minoritized students;
  • Post and maintain a minimum of four (4) office hours per week;
  • Teach at Wellesley Hills, Framingham, or Ashland campuses as assigned; classes may also be held at regional high schools and regional employers and other off-site locations;
  • Participate in the improvement and development of academic programs and resources, designations, accreditation, articulation, and assessment of courses and programs;
  • Collaborate on selecting, recommending, creating, and preparing suitable instructional materials, lab experiences, simulations, and demonstrations that utilize a wide variety of teaching methods and modalities;
  • Submit midterm and final grade reports, attendance records, early alerts, and other reports pertaining to assigned courses by required due dates;
  • Serve on College committees as elected or appointed;
  • Attend program, division, and committee meetings;
  • Assist the program and STEM Dean in recruiting qualified adjunct faculty as needed;
  • Engage in professional development activities to maintain excellence in teaching and learning;
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned by the Dean consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering or a related field;
  • At least 3 years of paid occupational experience;
  • Experience or training in using a variety of advanced manufacturing and other relevant tools and equipment including, but not restricted to, microcontrollers, microprocessors, PLC, CNC, and 3D-printers; and
  • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering or a related field;

  • Experience in curricular planning and assessment as well as practices, technologies, and inclusive pedagogy to enhance student learning;
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems;
  • Fluency and/or experience teaching in Spanish and/or Portuguese;
  • Familiarity with college accreditation standards;
  • Interest in participating in grant activities;
  • Experience with federal and/or state grants;
  • Interest in and familiarity with workforce development needs in the regional community;
  • Experience with outreach activities with K-12 schools;
  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility, including understanding of the importance of holding oneself and colleagues accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices;
  • Experience reframing inequities as a problem of practice, and viewing the elimination of inequities as an individual and collective responsibility;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students; and
  • Experience supporting institutional practices that both develop and sustain culturally responsive teaching and learning environments.
