The Clinical Mentor - RN at Barnes-Jewish Hospital provides guidance and support to new graduate nurses during night shifts in the GI/GU and Minimally Invasive Surgery units. This role fosters professional development through effective communication, team collaboration, and clinical decision-making assistance, promoting optimal patient care. With a focus on enhancing nurse competencies, the Clinical Mentor contributes to the retention of nursing staff and the overall quality of care within a top-ranked healthcare facility.

Kidney/Liver Transplant surgery provides the best transplant care in the country. A variety of transplant procedures are performed regularly including kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants. With the treatment of kidney disease at Barnes-Jewish Hospital consistently ranked among the best in the nation by US News and World Report, more than 100 kidney transplants are performed each year alone. Our multidisciplinary transplant team is comprised of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, and spiritual caregivers who communicate daily to meet patient needs. Nurses are provided an extensive orientation specific to the care of our patients, including critical care training.
Role Purpose
Serves as a resource for inpatient support during the night shift for new graduate nurses who are developing their clinical competencies and decision making skills. Provides guidance and assistance while giving additional support in the assessment, evaluation and intervention responsibilities with patients. Can be consulted by new graduate nurses as needed for advice and recommendations related to direct patient care issues, assistance with approaching their nursing peers or other care providers, support performing procedures or in managing unique patient and family dynamics.
