Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC)

Required : A High School Diploma or GED plus one (1) year of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.

Equivalency: A combination of education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties may also be considered at the discretion of the Human Resources Department.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Level: Six (6)

Salary Range: $15.66 - $17.68 DOE

Located in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) is a newly independent public community college accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. A proud Hispanic Serving Institution, it awards certificates and associate degrees that serve the needs of its region and prepare students to transfer to programs at other colleges or universities. SENMC offers Early College and Dual Credit programs in collaboration with local high schools.

Purpose and Scope:

Under direct supervision, the Custodial Worker is responsible for the thorough cleaning and custodial maintenance of buildings and work areas, ensuring a safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment. This role emphasizes the use of proper cleaning methods, materials, and equipment while adhering to established routines and safety protocols. Performance is regularly evaluated through inspections of work areas to maintain high-quality standards. The Custodial Worker also provides daily coordination, guidance, and leadership to custodial staff, fostering teamwork and ensuring efficient and effective completion of tasks.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Dusts, mops, and vacuums floors and carpets; cleans restrooms and restocks paper and soap supplies to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards.

  • Performs routine maintenance on custodial equipment and supplies to ensure efficient operation.

  • Empties trash receptacles, bags trash for proper disposal, and secures doors after cleaning is complete.

  • Supervises support staff as needed, including assigning workloads and monitoring employee performance.

  • Changes light bulbs as directed and ensures proper care and maintenance of all equipment and supplies.

  • Promotes and adheres to workplace safety protocols and environmental best practices to support a safe and healthy work environment.

  • Maintains adequate custodial supplies to meet daily operational needs and orders materials as required.

  • Documents custodial activities and maintain accurate records of work performed.

  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned to support department goals and operations.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.

  • Familiarity with workplace safety standards and environmental regulations related to custodial operations.

  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on custodial equipment.

  • Skill in supervising, training, and motivating support staff to ensure efficient workflow.

  • Ability to organize, assign, and monitor workload effectively.

  • Competence in maintaining inventory levels and ordering necessary supplies.

  • Strong attention to detail in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards.

  • Ability to document work activities accurately and maintain records.

  • Good physical stamina and dexterity to perform cleaning tasks and operate equipment.

  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with team members and supervisors.

  • Ability to follow safety protocols and promote a safe working environment.
