Job Description

Nature of work :
This is work performing university sworn law enforcement duties.

Typical Responsibilities:
Patrols assigned area(s) to insure the personal safety of the university populace and to provide protection and security to facilities. Directs traffic. Investigates accidents, complaints, disturbances, and law violations by interviewing complainants, suspects, and witnesses; secures incident area; and collects and preserves evidence. Pursues, apprehends, and arrests law violators and suspected law violators. Issues traffic warnings and citations. Controls crowds during special events, catastrophes, riots, and demonstrations. Provides armed escort for university monies. During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job related duties at a designated off campus location or place of residence.

Required Qualifications:
Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statutes, and have one year of law enforcement experience. Two years of military or other appropriate experience may substitute for the required one year of law enforcement experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/ technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

General Description / Primary Purpose:
Responsible for maintaining a safe environment on the University campus through enforcement of State Statutes, Local Ordinances, and University Regulations. Required to conduct preliminary and latent investigations of all incidents which require police assistance and document these situations when appropriate. Strives to maintain a positive rapport with the community in the performance of duties. Maintains demeanor at all times.

Job Function:
Conducts pro-active preventative patrol to include foot patrol in appropriate areas to assure the safety of the University Community. Is required to take appropriate police action when confronted with violators of the law or potentially hazardous situations. Investigates criminal incidents and prepare preliminary reports. Maintains an acceptable level of proficiency in investigations, report writing, and all aspects of his/her duties. Safeguards pedestrian traffic on campus through selective traffic enforcement to include, but not be limited to issuance of traffic citations or written warnings. Maintains smooth flow of traffic on campus by monitoring campus road networks and recognizing engineering deficiencies and traffic hazards. Relieves congested intersections using traffic control. Assists in parking control through the issuance of parking citations. Assists the public by providing information, first aid, vehicle assistance, and all other appropriate requests for assistance. Provides escort service for personnel or monies when requested. Responsible for securing University facilities at designated times. When appropriate, allows building access to authorized individuals. Provides emergency access and assistance when requested. Provides crowd control at special events, monitors, and responds to all alarms on campus. Performs relief duties in the Communications Center when needed. This position is designated as a Tier 1 respondent for designated campus emergencies and events. In the event of a declared campus emergency, the position incumbent will make every effort to return to campus to commence evaluation and recovery operations. Other duties as assigned.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to drive vehicles safely and operate communication/emergency equipment simultaneously. Ability to maintain personal fitness. Ability to pursue and apprehend suspects on foot and in the vehicle. Ability to subdue offenders. Ability to make a forcible arrest. Ability to climb/run/walk/jump/crawl/drag/lift/carry/push. Ability to demonstrate dragging a 150-pound simulated body 50 feet. Ability to demonstrate scaling two of the following obstacles with no time limit: seven-foot ladder, five-foot chain link fence, and six-foot chain link fence.

This position requires a Certificate of Compliance in Law Enforcement issued by The Florida Criminal Justice Standards & Training Commission. Applicant must maintain this certificate and a valid driver's license during employment. A physical agility examination must be passed before consideration for this position.
