Position overview

Salary range: The posted UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See the following table for the salary scale for this position . A reasonable estimate for this position is $64,329 - $74,576.



Percent time: Positions range from 33% to 100% each semester. Summer positions are 11%.



Anticipated start: Positions usually start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester). Summer appointments begin in late May and run into early August.



Review timeline: Typically, appointments for summer and Fall semester are reviewed in February/March, and appointments for Spring semester in October/November. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.



Position duration: Appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis. Appointments may be renewable based on the department's needs, funding, and on lecturer performance.

Position description

The Department of German at UC Berkeley seeks applications for a pool of qualified lecturers to teach German courses in any of the possible areas:


  • German language courses (of various levels)

  • Reading and Composition (first- and second-year undergraduate writing courses in English on German topics)

  • Upper-level courses in such areas as translation and multilingualism, German literature, and contemporary Germany (e.g. migration, nationalism, media, and popular culture)


    In addition to instruction, general duties include holding office hours, developing syllabi and assignments, writing and grading exams, and grading and commenting on papers. Other duties may be assigned by the Chair as necessary.

    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Completed master's degree (or equivalent international degree).

    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
    For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by start date of the position. The Department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

    Preferred qualifications
  • Native or near-native fluency in German and English.

  • College level teaching experience in the U.S.

  • For language instruction: Demonstrated excellence in teaching, familiarity with college-level language programs, and relevant teaching experience using current language-teaching methodologies.

  • For R&C instruction: Demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English.

  • For literature/culture instruction: Demonstrated expertise in German language, literature, and culture, with possible emphasis in media, politics, social issues, and popular culture.
