OVERVIEW Brooklyn Friends School (BFS), a thriving Preschool-12 grade school located in vibrant Downtown Brooklyn, seeks an Lower School Science Teacher (leave replacement) within a dynamic community of colleagues (BFS uses the all-inclusive term, colleagues, to refer to all rather than one that delineates faculty/staff). THE POSITION

Reporting to the Head of Lower School, t he Lower School Science Teacher (Leave Replacement) collaborates with classroom and grade level colleagues, specialist teachers, and administration to plan, create, and implement science curriculum for children in grades K-4. Applicants should have experience working with and teaching science curriculum in an elementary setting. Demonstration of strong classroom management skills, comfort using classroom technology, an investment in continued professional growth, and a commitment to promoting a diverse community is expected. They are responsible for ongoing assessment and communication with parents and the Head of the Lower School about children’s progress. Additionally, the Science Teacher is responsible for duties as assigned. All Lower School teachers are expected to be active community members, sharing supervisory duties and general support and care of the school community.  

Primary Responsibilities Include:

This position reports to the Head of  Lower School.

  • Teach Science classes to all Lower School classes (Grades K - 4).
  • Support the academic/social/emotional development of all students
  • Collaborate well with colleagues to plan, create, and implement curriculum
  • Communicate effectively with families with regards to all aspects of classroom life and child development 
  • Align curriculum and activities to the Next Generation Science Standards 
  • Be responsible for ongoing student assessment 
  • Share supervisory duties and general support and care of the school community  
  • Perform necessary routine tasks and daily maintenance of the classroom
  • Serves as an active community member that is highly collaborative and partners well with teachers, families, and administration

Physical Requirements of the Job:

  • Must be able to work in an office environment including prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand, bend over, twist and reach to access file cabinets, bookshelves and navigate office and workstation spaces.
  • Must be able to ambulate through a classroom setting, including walking up stairs. 

Union Status : Non-Union

Salary Range: $69,500 to $85,000

This salary range represents the expected annual salary range for this position. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we'll consider your education level, experience, and other job-related factors.
