FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, hourly up to 40 hours per week
Work Hours: variable, based on clinic needs
*Summary:*
The Medical Director at ROH is responsible for medical operations of the treatment program. The Medical Director assumes responsibility for administering all medical services performed by the Opioid Treatment Program. In addition, the medical director shall be responsible for ensuring that the OTP follows all applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations. He/ She evaluates and ensures patients served meet admission criteria, receive required physicals, and laboratory testing. In addition, the Medical Director is responsible for prescribing Methadone/Buprenorphine with consideration to client input and reviewing/signing treatment plans. The Medical Director works collaboratively with all members of ROH, and directly with the Medical Team to ensure medical components of the organization are appropriately coordinated. He/she assumes the responsibility of providing clinical and administrative leadership.

*Essential Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:*
Medical Director Duties
· Responsible for assessment of patients in acute care/detox/Methadone maintenance/Buprenorphine maintenance. Assesses patient's physical and mental status using vital signs, lab tests, COWS and / or any other medical assessment technique deemed necessary and appropriate by the Medical or Clinical Staff at ROH.
· Oversees medical compliance with federal and state guidelines, and DEA protocols. Ensures and provides quality of care and best practices as set forth by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)'s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT)'s Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIPS) #43 titled Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction in Opioid Treatment Programs.
· Responsible for and is the ultimate authority for prescribing, dispensing, administration, alteration, and tapering of Methadone, Buprenorphine, and Opioid Treatment in accordance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations.

· Responsible, either directly, or through a supervisory relationship with RN for ensuring all information obtained during physical examinations, laboratory results, and other diagnostic evaluations are duly recorded in all patient records. Ensuring all physical examinations assess and certify each applicant's eligibility for Medication Assisted Treatment.
· Responsible for assigned patient care including but not limited to medical assessments, medical reports, coordinating care with outside physicians, and timely documentation in patient medical record. Collaborates with counseling and medical team regarding patient care.
· Performs medical review for patient. Provides patients with knowledge regarding Medication Assisted Treatment, medications provided by ROH, and affords patients the opportunity to have questions answered regarding medical aspects of treatment.
· Attends clinical and staff meetings regarding patient admission, care, and progress. Participates in required training to maintain unrestricted licensure and registration.
Supervisory Duties:
· (Scope of the person's authority, including a list of jobs that report to this job). Supervises and oversees RN, LPN, and all medical staff. Coordinates daily tasks with nursing staff as deemed necessary and appropriate.
· Provides overall leadership and management for patient care. Evaluates all medical staff and provides feedback to the Program Director regarding medical staff. Accounts for planning, coordinating, and evaluating patient care delivered by the medical team ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies.
· Responsible for day-to-day orders regarding patient care; including but not limited to standing orders, dose changes, physician orders (EKG, referrals, labs, etc.), phase/level changes, guest dosing orders, and verbal orders.
· Supervises the delivery of medical care and services, including new admissions, annual physical examinations, medical follow-up and methadone/buprenorphine related medical activities.
· Communicates and collaborates with other departments to improve interdepartmental relationships.

*Education: *Doctorate
*Licensure/ Certification/Registration: *Unrestricted license to practice medicine in North Carolina.
Unrestricted DEA, state, and federal controlled substance licenses and registration. Board certified or board eligible, authorization to practice psychiatry preferred.
*Experience: *3-5 years' experience providing medical/ psychiatric clinical services including assessing and diagnosing mental illness, substance abuse, and prescribing medication.
Preferred 3-5 years' experience as a Medication Assisted Treatment Medical Director/ Program Physician.
Skills: Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional counseling, of health promotion and disease prevention is required. Knowledge of addiction, chemical dependency and withdrawal symptoms is required. Understanding of opiate addictions, the stages of detox and the FDA approved treatment medications is required. The ability to perform objective and accurate assessments of intoxication, withdrawal, detox, and overdose is required.
Must be computer-literate and become competent in computerized programs in use at ROH. Additionally, staff in this position must become competent in the use of EMR, computerized word-processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation programs.

● Promotes patient's independence by establishing patient care goals including but not limited to understanding of medications dispensed by ROH, knowledge of withdrawal and overdose symptoms, abuse and dependency, and self-care.
● Documents patient care services by charting, following all ROH policies, as well as all Federal and State laws regarding medical record documentation, maintenance and retention.
● Attends inter-disciplinary meetings as required and collaborates with the medical and clinical teams regarding patient care. Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.
● Consistently reports to work on time, prepared to perform the duties of the position. Meets productivity standards and performs duties as workload necessitates. Always act in the best interest of the patient, program and ROH.
● Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies.
● Performs all other duties as required. Performs all tasks necessary to improve the quality of care, to improve the productivity of medical staff, and to improve patient satisfaction with the medical/nursing care they receive

- Familiarity with FDA regulations and best practices in acute care settings
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in pediatrics or occupational health
- Knowledge of Level II Trauma Center operations
- Proficiency in managing complex healthcare projects
