Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

STE in partnership with the National Parks of New York Harbor, are seeking a service member who will serve as a mentor and crew leader for a high school aged historic preservation crew conducting work in a back country setting. The crew leader will work together with their crew members to conduct hands on historic preservation work, while camping, under the supervision of NPS Staff. By the completion of their internship the crew leader will walk away with practical experiences with being a leader, project management, and teamwork.

This preservation project is being organized in collaboration between NPNH and Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway Alaska. This collaboration thus exposes the crew leader interns to a wider range of NPS careers and greatly expands their potential networking opportunities.

The historic preservation crew and their crew leader will be rehabilitating and restoring a log cabin structure (the Patterson-McDermott Cabin), under guidance and support from NPS field experts. This is the last remaining intact historic structure in the town site of Dyea, AK, and offers the intern a unique opportunity to make an impact on a historic preservation project. The physical work involved will include rehabbing about 8 log ends, rebuilding window frames, reglazing windows, and repainting areas as needed.

This project management intern will serve as a peer mentor and offer a young adult the opportunity to step up into a new level of responsibility. A crew leader is an autonomous and rigorous role requiring advanced level planning, detailed tracking, communication, and practicing leadership skills. In addition, the intern will be documenting their actions to create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or Project Plan including timing of communications, email templates, tracking resources and (anything else required as a crew leader), to serve as a reference for future crew leads. By the completion of their internship the crew leader will walk away with practical experiences with being a leader, project management, and collaborating with others.
