POSITION PURPOSE:

This position performs a variety of work involving the operation, maintenance, and construction of public parks and facilities, which include buildings, structures, grounds, trails, parking lots, playgrounds, sports courts/fields, boat ramps and docks. Incumbents ensure that parks and open space are clean, safe, and enjoyable for the public.

Work is performed under general supervision. The supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines; and assists incumbent with unusual situations, which do not have clear objectives or precedents. Incumbents are expected to plan and execute work assignments, handling conditions and challenges in accordance with laws regulations, city policies and procedures.

Maintenance Worker level: Salary Range: $4,963.82 - $6,280.61 per month

This is the entry level classification in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker by the performance of the more basic and routine duties. The incumbent may or may not have specific skillset to conduct complex construction, maintenance, and repair duties. Additionally, Maintenance Workers require more training, quality control checks and general supervision than Senior Maintenance Workers. Since this class is considered an entry level position, employees may have limited or no direct work experience.

Maintenance Worker-CDL level: Salary Range: $5,212.04 - $6,594.85 per month
The CDL level classification is distinguished by the Maintenance Worker level by the possession of a Commercial Driver's License.
The City offers a wide variety of training and development opportunities, to include additional pay for certifications and license, subject to rules outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following :
  • Operation, inspection and maintenance of all equipment and hand tools used to complete assigned tasks.
  • Perform ground maintenance including mowing, weeding, planting, blowing, vegetation management, litter picking, irrigation system maintenance and repairs, pest control, aerating soils, applying herbicide and fertilizer, and other landscaping needs.
  • Perform maintenance and operation of facilities including equipment repair, equipment troubleshooting, cleaning, general repair, hardware repair, electrical repair and installation, plumbing repair and installation, roof repair, sheetrock repair, lighting repair, lighting installation, and interior and exterior painting.
  • Perform maintenance on restrooms and other facilities including cleaning, minor repair activities, and janitorial services. Minor repair activities may include basic carpentry, drywall, concrete and masonry work, roofing, gutters, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work.
  • Clean, maintain, repair, and install City Parks storm water systems.
  • Grade, pave, patch, surface treatment, gravel, sweeping, clean, strip, and perform other repairs on park parking lots, sidewalks, and trails.
  • Install, repair, and maintain various signs, kiosks, tables, benches, fences, playground equipment, recreational equipment, trails, walkways, and other amenities.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide verbal information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Perform various work to support special events and recreational needs of the City and Parks Department.
  • Perform work on the lake and on the water's edge, including boat ramp and dock maintenance, buoy maintenance and removing water hazards.
  • Perform work in accordance with all federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations and within mandated and appropriate safety standards and permit requirements.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed, including providing support to the Public Works department and assisting with snowplowing.
  • Serve as an on-call employee in after normal work hours and in emergency situations requiring parks and/or public works attention, if eligible.
  • Keep vehicles, shop and storage area clean and orderly.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Perform related duties as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed outdoors, subject to travelling by City vehicle from site to site several times each day. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent will regularly work outside and is exposed to extreme cold and heat, wet and/or humid conditions, and exposed to changing weather conditions such as rain, sun, and snow; occasionally works in confined spaces; regularly works in the public view and in heavily used parks. The incumbent is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration and frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to very loud while operating machinery or working near equipment.

Must meet the physical requirements/demands to flag according to the Washington State Transportation Commission regulations.

Maintenance and operations tasks often require the use of powered and non-powered hand tools and equipment, including but not limited to mowers, edgers, trimmers, backpack blower, chainsaws, spreaders, pressure washers, paint sprayers, and post hole drivers. Work also requires equipment operation including, but not limited to, use of backhoes, tractors, excavators. Proper maintenance of equipment is a requirement of this position. It is the expectation that Maintenance Workers will gain proficiency and practice safety inspections, operations and maintenance of all tools and equipment.

The incumbent may also be required to work on weekends, evenings, and holidays, subject to call back after normal work hours for emergency work. The incumbent may be required to carry a city phone after hours and on weekends. The incumbent may be required to work alone during work hours and on emergency call outs after hours. The incumbent may also be exposed to individuals who are irate or hostile. Work requires emphasis on safety of city employees and the public.

Experience: Experience with the safe operation of lawnmowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, light construction equipment (tractor), and trucks performing general maintenance tasks is required. One (1) year of maintenance and repair in public works, parks, construction, or landscaping is preferred;

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS and OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid driver's license and a driving record which meets the city's requirements. If driver's license is out of state, must be able to obtain Washington State driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid Washington State Flagger's Card or ability to obtain within six (6) months of date of hire is preferred.
  • First-Aid Certification or the ability obtain certification within six (6) months of employment is required.
  • Valid Washington State Boater's License is preferred.
  • CDL job class only: Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver License. Ability to drive air brake equipped vehicles with tanker endorsement is required.
  • Completion of position-relevant background check.
