Overview

The Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology seeks a motivated Research Assistant to join the team. The Research Assistant will also have laboratory management responsibilities in a hybrid computational/experimental microbiology lab working at the interface of microbiology and climate science. Experiments will involve standard microbiological techniques for isolating, culturing, genetically modifying, and characterizing microbes chemically/physiologically. Computational work could include genomic analyses, machine learning, and simple mathematical modeling approaches.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include the following:

• Setting up and maintaining laboratory equipment
• Preparing reagents, e.g. growth media, competent cells, stocks
• Conducting computational research tasks, e.g. genomics
• Completing laboratory duties, e.g. purchasing, scheduling, reagent management
• Conducting microbiological experiments
• Writing protocols, and eventually papers

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in the sciences
• Excellent English language communication skills, capable of clear communication in a work setting
• 1 or more years of programming experience in Python, Matlab, or something similar
• General numeracy skills, e.g. facility with numbers, algebra, and basic statistics
• 1 or more years of coursework in general biological knowledge

Preferred:

• Have experience with mathematical computing and a demonstrated interest in biological research, e.g. worked in a research lab

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
