Job Description
The Residential Construction Intern will be an integral member of Habitat for Humanity of Omaha's (HFHO) Construction team, which is primarily responsible for completing three phases of new home building: 1) framing, 2) installation of exterior siding, storm doors and porch railings; and building decks, and 3) installation of interior doors, trim and cabinets. This Intern position will receive material on-the-job training from Senior Construction Supervisors and other skilled team members and gain experience in all areas of HFHO's construction program. The Intern will be expected to assist with worksite preparation and setup as well as cleanup at the end of each day. Safety is a key component of any construction worksite, so the Intern will be provided with training to safely operate all tools. Upon successful completion of training, this role will also provide the Intern with the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills by guiding volunteers through one or more of the building phases during a workday.
Requirements
Project Organization & Administration - Work with training and oversight from experienced construction staff.
- Assist staff with various residential construction tasks including, but not limited to, framing, siding, installation of doors, windows, interior cabinets and trim.
- Assist with building demolition and renovation of rehab houses.
- Complete other tasks successfully that are assigned by Senior Construction Supervisors and skilled team members within allotted time-period.
- Safely operate and maintain a variety of construction tools.
- Responsible use of equipment, tools, supplies and materials so each project remains within allocated budget and schedule.
- Record daily work accomplishments within project management application.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Maintain good communication and cooperative relationships with all other HFHO staff, departments, project teams and contractors.
- Show up to work on time and be prepared for the day.
- View your HFHO email account at least once per day.
Safety - Adhere to worksite safety requirements and safe work practices.
Volunteers - With training and guidance from Senior Construction Supervisors, develop skills to lead volunteers.
- Ensure that volunteers and family partners have a fulfilling volunteer experience.
Quality and Resources - Maintain and protect all tools, equipment, and materials while on the jobsite.
- Maintain a clean and organized worksite.
- Practice good stewardship with HFHO's resources.
- Return tools to assigned vehicle or proper storage location by the end of each day.
Schedule - Assist the Senior Construction Supervisors in meeting the project schedule.
- Inform Senior Construction Supervisors of any conditions that affect the build schedule.
Supervisory Responsibilities - This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications - To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each previously stated duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and ability necessary to succeed as a Construction Crew Leader.
Education - A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Previous or current enrollment in construction education or training program preferred.
Experience - Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, safety practices and equipment used in the homebuilding trade preferred, but not required.
Skills - Individual must be a good communicator.
- Basic use of a tape measure and level preferred.
- Proficiency in basic mathematics and conversion of measurements is preferred.
- Ability to work collegial within a team.
- Computer literacy is preferred.
Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit, use their hands and fingers to handle and maneuver or feel objects, tools or controls. They must reach with their hands and arms, climb or balance themselves; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; must be able to talk and hear. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Vision requirements are that the employee must see well, either naturally or with correction, and must have good peripheral vision. The employee must be able to hear well either naturally, or with correction
. Work Environment The employee will predominantly be working outside. There is frequent exposure to wet, hot, cold, and /or humid conditions. The employee must be comfortable safely climbing a ladder to a second level height. The employee frequently works near heavy machinery, power tools and saws. At times, the noise level may be very loud. The worksite terrain may be rough and uneven.
