BDAA CASE STUDY on SDG’s & Ready Reckoner

Member Organisation:

About the project

As an association, the Building Designers Association of Australia BDAA has committed to incorporating sustainability and circular design into all decisions. Underpinning its vision are the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

Working with SDG Align the BDAA undertook an eight-month series of national workshops with its members and expert professionals from around the world to develop and create the Ready Reckoner, which is a tool that has been developed to allow its members to use to develop an awareness, an understanding and use to evaluate where their business sits within the sustainability sector. With the aim of upskilling its members to continue to create better sustainable outcomes.

Why it Works

Building Designers Association of Australia’s (BDAA) vision is to unite the building design industry to deliver a livable, green, efficient and smart built environment, delivering the economic, social and environmental benefits of sustainable design.

The ready reckoner tool has already had significant impact on the BDAA members who have trialled the ready reckoner, providing insights into their contribution to sustainable development and sectors where they could gain further knowledge to be at the forefront of designing better sustainable outcomes.

Insights

Through the consideration of Sustainable Development, the awareness of the social and economic elements of sustainable development are highlighted in addition to the environmental focus which tends to dominate the current narrative.

By recognising that most members businesses are already making a positive contribution and highlighting areas for improvement we make practical recommendations to further engage businesses to increase their impact.
The ready reckoner will help members businesses to align their company from four dimensions (finance, internal processes, innovation and customers) with a measurable contribution to sustainable development and in the future fill gaps in skills issues through training and credentialing.

Whichever way the tool is navigated, each interrogation ends with rich information on what to do next. The downloadable report provides a personalised benchmark for the business and identifies practical next steps to take at their own pace.

The backend (algorithm) of the Ready Reckoner maps measurement frameworks and concepts, such as Balanced Scorecard analysis, with the Global Reporting Framework for SDG disclosures and units of competency from the Australian vocational training system.
